Import Export in the Gambia - Business & Trade Investments in West Africa

West Africa has a potential market of over 270 million consumers, and offers real business opportunities for manufacturing and exporting companies wishing to build a market share in the emerging markets of Africa.

The Gambia is blessed with a long and glorious tradition of trade. It is strategically situated at the African end of the Atlantic Trade Triangle, a trade route dating back into centuries between Africa, Europe and the USA, Central and Latin America.

The Gambia has the nearest harbour on the African continent to both Europe and the Americas and within West African countries, Banjul Port in The Gambia is unrivalled, turning around vessels much faster than the regional competition. The Port of Banjul is also widely recognised for its safety, service reliability and unrivalled management system and has become the port of choice for the shipping, importation and distribution of products, goods and commodities to the whole of West Africa.

The Gambia has become an important West African investment & business centre and an ideal launch pad for trade with neighbouring West African countries Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau and Mauritania. and also further afield to import and export to English speaking Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia and to French speaking Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, and Togo and Portuguese speaking Cape Verde.

The Port of Banjul is continuously being upgraded and modernised to meet the needs of a growing trade sector stimulated by the Gambia Trade Gateway Project.

Winter holidays: follow the sun - Africa - Travel - The Independent

Alternative Africa

Egypt is not the sole option for African sunshine. A six-hour flight from London, Gambia is the leading West African beach hotspot for British travellers. There is not much of this narrow slice of a nation – the smallest country on the African continent, a thin wedge driven into the side of Senegal – but what there is comes dotted with unfussy retreats such as the four-star Ocean Bay Resort, near Banjul.

The Gambia Scorpions VS The Burkina Faso Stallions

Wrestling is the traditional national sport of The Gambia; however football (soccer) is clearly the most popular sport in The Gambia today. Gambians also enjoy cricket, golf, sailing, sport fishing, and surfing. Almost every school and village in The Gambia has a football pitch, and on most side streets you can find youths participating in an impromptu football game. On October 8th some friends came over to my house and we got ready to walk over to International Stadium (just two blocks from my house) for a game between the national football teams of The Gambia and Burkina Faso. The game was a qualifying match that was to determine whether The Gambia Scorpions would make it to The Africa Cup of Nations. Well the game was a draw with a final score of 1-1, so The Scorpions did not make it but we still had a good time. Here are some pictures from the game, click on the pictures to enlarge them...

Tickets to the game!

These guys are Burkina Faso Stallions fans.

Over 200 German tourists arrive in Banjul - The Point Newspaper, Banjul, The Gambia

The second batch of tourists for the 2010-2011 winter tourist season arrived in the country on Wednesday at 4a.m. local time.

The tourists numbering two hundred and twenty-eight (228) were brought by the Condor flight directly from Germany to The Gambia.

The acting-director of Tourism accompanied by senior officials from her department as well as journalists was at the foot of the aircraft to receive the holidaymakers.

Speaking to journalists, Fatou Biyai, director of Tourism, thanked all those who companied her to the airport to receive the second flight of tourists into the country.

She said the coming of the Condor flight has really increased the number of expected tourists for this year’s tourist season.

The senior tourism official noted that the Ministry of Tourism is looking at how to increase the number of tourist arrivals annually.

Madam Biyai said that over the years they have been having what they call the ‘back parkers’ coming to the country but they have also been encouraging more newcomers as well.

“Since we had the tour with the Minister, we have seen that most of the hotels have improved in their qualities,” she explained.

The director went further to reveal that the industry has 4 to 5 star hotels and many other hotels offer high quality services.

“The Condor flight which has been absent in The Gambia for the past four years is now coming to The Gambia four times per week. “We are hoping to increase the number of flights that are coming to the country,” the tourism director said.

According to her, the Ministry of Tourism has started working on a lot of things to encourage other airlines to come to the country.

“Hopefully for next year we are expecting other two airlines to join Condor,” she said.

A morning with Mariama, a midwife at SOS Clinic Bakoteh — SOS Children

In The Gambia, facilities for professionally assisted births are rare. To help to reduce maternal and infant mortality, SOS Children set up a maternity ward at the SOS Clinic in Bakoteh nearly two years ago. Mariama is one of the midwifes at the hospital.

The maternity ward of the SOS Clinic in Bakoteh provides hundreds of local women with quality pre-and post-natal care. With more than 14 years of experience, Mariama has worked in very poor and difficult conditions to deliver babies safely. She knows that the Bakoteh clinic is one of the top facilities in the country. "We are one of the best equipped clinic for deliveries", says Mariama.

9:00 am.  Isatou, a Senegalese woman, arrives accompanied by her mother-in-law. She is in advanced labour and, as it is her second child, might deliver quickly. Both beds of the delivery room are free, so Mariama quickly settles her and checks her over.

9:45 am. Bintou, nearly at full term, comes in with her sister. She is in severe pain and hopes that she will give birth today. Unfortunately, her contractions are not linked to a beginning of labour. All Mariama can do is to give her something to help her to relax. "Some handle pain better", explains Mariama. "We cannot do much but give them some pills to help them relax. Here, there is no epidural. But African women are very strong!"

11:00 am. Isatou delivers a very healthy baby girl. Once Mariama makes sure everything is fine with the baby, she returns to Isatou who needs some stitching.

11:45 am. Just has Mariama finishes her post-delivery care, the cleaner comes to inform her that a woman has just arrived with her new-born baby. She did not make it in time to the maternity ward, and delivered in the taxi. "This happens regularly" explains Mariama, "women here often wait until the last minute to come. It can create some complications, but in this case, it both the mother and the baby look fine".

The new-born baby boy is in good health. Mariama checks over his mother to see whether she needs any post-delivery assistance. "Many women are unaware that they could need some stitching and proper post-delivery care in some cases. As very few of them come back once they have delivered, I usually prefer to give them some antibiotics to prevent post-delivery complications" she says.

Soon, both mothers are transferred to the post-natal area, where they will stay up to 24 hours if they want to. In many other community clinics, women and their babies are discharged just a few hours after birth.

Mariama sorts out the delivery room and pre-washes her materials before sending them for sterilisation. She then helps another pregnant woman to settle in the labour room, before checking on Bintou, still in contractions.

1:15 pm. Mariana can now enjoy a bit of quite time, as she fills in the birth registry for the new-borns and their mothers.

1:30 pm. The second shift arrives. After paying everyone a last visit, Mariama briefs her colleagues about her morning’s activities.

Mariama can now go home and have a well deserved rest, knowing that she contributes to reducing maternal and infant mortality everyday. Find out more about the medical services we provide for hundreds of thousands of people around the world in a special edition of Family Matters.

BBC Sport - Gambia begin search for new coach after sacking Put

Gambia are looking for a new coach after Belgian Paul Put was fired for failing to lead the team to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 55-year-old was sacked on Monday following the Scorpions dismal performance in the qualifiers.

The team's goalkeeping coach Franco Cresentini of Italy was also dismissed.

"The coach got the sack after his failure to qualify the team to the Nations Cup," secretary at the sports ministry Alieu Jammeh said.

The Belgian coach took over the Scorpions in 2007 and had his contract extended despite failing to lead the contract to the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola last year.

Despite the failure, Put's contract was renewed, with a salary worth $16,000 per month.

Changing Money Gambia: Gambia Banking, ATM, Travellers Cheques, Money and Currency Exchange

Changing Holiday Money

If you're in search of a budget beach holiday, a cheap family holiday or a luxury winter sun break then Gambia could be the perfect choice.

Gambia is outside the Eurozone so offers great value for money as a holiday destination. The exchange rate in Euraopean banks is notoriously low and Arch Tours advise travellers to the Gambia not to change holiday spending money into Dalasis while in Europe.

There are many legal change shops in Gambia offering exchange rates that can be as much as 20 % than the rates offered in Europe. The British Pound is widely accepted and there is no need to change pounds into Euros as some travel companies suggest.

Gambia Banking: Money & Currency Exchange

Scroll down for Gambian currency and holiday money information including foreign exchange rates, ATM's, banking hours, credit cards, traveller's cheques and currency restrictions.

Currency in Gambia: Gambian Dalasi

Gambian Dalasi (GMD; symbol D) = 100 bututs. Notes are in denominations of D100, 50, 25, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of D1, and 50 bututs.

Foreign Exchange: Changing Money in Gambia

There is a bank or bureau de change (Trust Bank) at the airport (Mon-Fri 0900-1600, Fri 0900-1230). The capital, Banjul, and the nearby towns of Serrekunda, Bakau, Fajara and Kololi have a number of banks where foreign currencies can be exchanged.

Exchange bureaux are found in all the main tourist resorts. Some hotels also offer foreign exchange facilities, but tend to charge high commissions. As The Gambia is a cash economy travellers are advised to carry sufficient currency to cover expenses of a planned visit.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards and ATMs in Gambia

While some hotels will accept American Express, MasterCard and Visa if arranged at the beginning of the stay, many local businesses only accept payment by cash or traveller's cheques.

ATMs are available in large urban areas, but are few in number and not always reliable. Due to credit card and bank fraud, caution is advised when using credit cards and ATMs.

Traveller's Cheques in Gambia

To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in Pounds Sterling or Euros.

Currency Restrictions in Gambia

Restrictions apply.

Banking Hours in Gambia

Mon-Thurs 0800-1330, Fri 0800-1100 (banks in Banjul); Mon-Fri 0800-1200 and 1600-1800, Sat 0800-1300 (banks elsewhere).

Several ferries are operated along the river; the main ones being Banjul to Barra and the river crossing at Farafenni on the busy Trans-Gambia highway. Vehicle and passenger ferries between Banjul’s commercial port and the town facing it across the river mouth, Barra, run at least once an hour in each direction until late evening.

The Government maintains a policy of upgrading these ferries, and procuring new ones when needed. Ferry operations are under the management of the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), a public enterprise in the transport industry.

There are nearly a dozen other places where travellers can cross the River Gambia by boat or local dug out cannoe.

Arch Tourss run adventure and fishing trips using small motor boats or large converted pirogues, and offer day cruises along the river with lunch or dinner and a live band.

Bush taxis: Apart from private taxis, shared taxis (cars, minibuses or vans) are the only form of public transport between towns and villages. They wait at their starting point until full then travel along fixed routes, stopping wherever passengers want to get on or off. Fares are fixed.

Private taxis: There are two types; neither have meters. Tourist taxis are painted green and are licensed by the Gambian Tourist Authority to operate from ranks in the resort areas; each rank has a noticeboard listing tariffs by destination. Local taxis are painted yellow with green stripes and can be hailed in the street; fares are lower and should be agreed in advance.

Bicycle hire: Available at many hotels and resorts.

Car hire: Greater Banjul has a few local and international providers. Driving can be difficult due to variable road conditions; some minor roads become impassable during the rainy season (June to October).

Documentation: An International Driving Permit will be accepted for a period of three months. A temporary licence is available from the local authorities on presentation of a valid UK licence.

April 2011 my boyfriend and I booked 2 tours with Arch. 4 in 1 and North Senegal. The 4 in 1 tour is so special and I would highly recommend it. Fantastic value for money, plenty of happy hours ( beers, coke, fanta, water or sprite) all included all day in the price if the trips. Food was also included and was delicious. JJ you and the boys made both the trips, we will never forget you or the sighs you showed us. Everyone who visits Kololi should book with Arch Tours, you won't be disappointed!!

Foreign Secretary celebrates 50 years of Amnesty International

28 May 2011 is the 50th Anniversary of the founding of human rights organisation Amnesty International.

To mark the occasion, the Foreign Secretary, William Hague said:

"For 50 years, Amnesty International has been amplifying the voices of individuals who might otherwise struggle to be heard.  I congratulate Amnesty and its members on their achievements over years of tireless campaigning.  Their work to protect and promote human rights, often at risk to themselves, has resulted in many lives saved and prisoners of conscience released.

"As we have seen with recent events in the Middle East and North Africa, the role of Amnesty International and other civil society organisations remains important in today’s world. I wish Amnesty continued success in the future."

Agricultural Investments in Gambia

Agricultural Investments in Gambia

The agricultural sub-sector is becoming a major economic activity in the Gambia due to its vast export market opportunities and conditions favoring its production in the country. There are a number of farms in this area with an average weekly export for 11 selected farms estimated at 120 tons of fruits and vegetables.

Land can be obtained from traditional land owners through the Government.

The process of land allocation for agriculture involves obtaining clearance from Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources before final approval is given by Ministry of Local Government and Lands.

Starting an Import Export Company in The Gambia: West Africa Import Export

Businesses enter the field of exporting for many and varied reasons, not the least of which might be to extend the market for a product that has proved popular on a domestic level. If the product or service is applicable to a wider market and it has been tested in your own country, chances are exporting it will prove similarly profitable. Not so good a marketing strategy however, is the decision to export something because it has not proved popular in the domestic marketplace.

Import Export Wholesale Business Starting Up

Some businesses begin with export marketing included in their corporate plan; others slip gradually into exporting, perhaps having been approached by an overseas buyer with whom a profitable business relationship emerges, and it subsequently becomes clear that other exporting avenues might also prove profitable. The most likely first venues for marketing abroad might well be those arising from unsolicited enquiries from potential foreign customers, and information obtained from trade publications, newspapers and specialist export publications.

Exports can obviously increase markets for one's goods many times over, but for the newcomer exporting can also present numerous complications and learning difficulties. Though the temptation might exist, the newcomer is usually advised to gradually enter the export field, perhaps starting with one overseas market and gradually increasing the range of destinations in which one's products and services are offered.

The all-important initial market research to assess the suitability of your product or service to overseas markets, is one that might well be aided by a visit to a trade show in the country of intended export.

There the exporter can speak to foreign and international business men and women and obtain copies of relevant trade publications. The exporter might well find the product requires some modification to suit overseas markets, and that an import licence is required before certain products will be allowed into some countries. All can be discussed with export information and advisory bodies on the entrepreneur's return to Britain. Amongst the more useful sources of information and advice for newcomers and established exporters are Chambers of Commerce, most of the largest of which are able to provide group selling facilities, fact finding services, organised trips abroad, payments & shipping advice, import export documentation advice, and so on.

It is advisable to join one of the larger Chambers of Commerce, such as those in London and Birmingham, as opposed to Chambers of Trade which though generally available in all main towns, are usually composed of retailers with no experience or interest in exporting. Many Chambers of Commerce hold regular meetings at which members can benefit from the experience and advice of fellow members and longer-established exporters. Additionally, many Chambers hold regular seminars on matters related to exporting, some aimed at relative beginners and therefore offering a more than useful insight into the ins and outs of this particular marketing method.

All of the major banks offer free literature and guidance to intending and established exporters, and many have specialist advisers available to answer whatever questions you might have in your beginning days as an exporter, as well as problems you might encounter as you begin venturing into new and untested markets.

Who Exports?

Though the benefits of exporting can apply to companies large and small, it is generally accepted that no small company should consider exporting until the company is well established in the domestic sector, or at least until one of the proprietors has sufficient knowledge and experience of exporting to make a concerted effort in overseas markets.

What to Export?

Selling abroad bears very little difference to selling in the UK; a need must be identified and a service or product introduced to fill that need. Few restrictions are placed on what can and can not be exported from Britain, other of course than defence supplies to certain countries, and restrictions on livestock and agricultural products. Where uncertain as to whether or not restrictions might be placed on particular products or services, the entrepreneur will obtain excellent advice from:

What restrictions and limitations the exporter is likely to encountering are more likely to be placed by that country into which one seeks entry for whatever products and services are concerned. Developing countries might place restrictions designedto protect their own growing industries. Import controls might reveal themselves in quotas, customs tariffs or complicated technical and documentation requirements. Information and advice on technical requirements might be available from:

If you are new to importing and exporting, we can provide import & export consulting services that will guide you through the entire process from start to finish.

First time importers to the Gambia and exporters from the Gambia can be easily overwhelmed by the vast number of requirements and the fragmented sources of information.

We will consult on every aspect of importing and exporting including supplier selection, contract negotiation, favourable shipping terms, carrier and route selection, EU & US Customs clearance, warehousing, sales and distribution, as well as any other area of concern for your company.

The international trade and logistics industry may appear daunting to new importers and exporters, many being discouraged and giving up before their business has even began. With us as your West African trading partner based in The Gambia, you will have a access to the latest business research and information and a wide range of import export and distribution services to assist in moving your goods around West Africa and beyond.

Exports to West Africa : Exporting to The Gambia, Re-exports to West Africa

Exports to West Africa : Re- Exports & Exports to The Gambia, West Africa

Most newcomers to exporting opt for the relative ease of supplying to English-speaking countries of the old Commonwealth and North America. In many cases British traditions and customs are still very much in evidence and the fact that many British banks and financial institutions have branches in these locations can greatly ease the assimilation process.

West Africa, with a potential market of over 270 million consumers, offers real business opportunities for those exporting companies looking for new and emerging markets. Owing to its strtegic location on the Atlantic trade and shipping routes between Africa and Europe, the USA, Central and Latin America and the Far East, The Gambia has become the port of choice for the importation, re-exportation and distribution of products, goods and services to the whole of West Africa..

The Gambia features as a launch pad for export and re export trade with neighbouring West African countries Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau and Mauritania. and also further afield to import and export to English speaking Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia and to French speaking Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, and Togo and Portuguerse speaking Cape Verde,

Within West African countries, Banjul Port in The Gambia is unrivalled, turning around vessels much faster than the regional competition and continuously being upgraded and modernised to meet the needs of a growing import export trade sector anticipated in the Gambia Trade Gateway Project (TGP).

Third World and developing countries present particular problems when it comes to importing and exporting. Import export payment facilities and procedures are rarely uncomplicated and locating and managing suitable sales and distribution channels in West Africa can prove difficult, time-consuming and costly

We have become specialists in imports and exports to and within West Africa in recent years, We can offer you advice on all aspects of shipping and trading in the emerging West African markets and look forward to discussing how we can work with you you from The Gambia,

Legal and Civil Infrastructure in The Gambia

Legal and Civil Infrastructure in The Gambia

Propety ownership is an integral part of the Gambian constitution. Land and property law in the Gambia is based on the British legal system and subject to the strict and unequivocal terms which goven it. This ensures that your property investment is absolutely secure. All matters are dealt with in English and many Gambian lawyers have qualified and practiced in the UK itself. As with all administrative systems minor inefficiences may exist within Gambian bureaucracy but fees paid to accredited Gambian lawyers will often speed up the conveyancing process and dispell any uncertainities regarding sharp practice, bribery or taxation issues.

As mentioned above all utilities rates and taxes are locally and centrally fixed and controlled by national companies and government bodies.

It is a four hour drive to Dakar International Airport, in neighbouring Senegal which is the international air hub for this region of West Africa. Direct flights from here exist to Paris, New York, Torronto, Rio, Dubai, the Middle East, South East Asia and major African destinations such Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. The Gambia is now considered a world class tourist destination. Forty years ago there were just two hotels in the Gambia. Now there are several hundred offering a range from a few pounds to five hundred pounds a night. Saudi Arabian money is funding the building of further five star luxury hotel developments along the coast.

There is a thriving, expanding European ex-pat community which now enjoys the low cost and high standard of living here. This ex-pat community creates a market for good quality rental accommodation. This in turn is driving the investment market to meet the rapidly increasing demand.

Business Investment in The Gambia: Commercial Investment in West Africa

A thriving economy founded on a successful private sector is linchpin to The Gambia's governance orientation. It appreciates that a government's only measure of credibility lies in its ability to translate the numeric of economic statistics into food on the peoples' tables, roofs on their heads and security in their minds, all these while guaranteeing a critical level of development commensurate with whatever is internationally apace.

GOOD GOVERNANCE, BIG BUSINESS

With a population of 1.3 million and ticking, The Gambia operates a multiparty, parliamentary democracy committed to the rule of law and a liberal, free market economy. Gaining independence from 200 years of British colonial rule in 1965, it moved to become a republic 5 years later and has since remained a beacon of political stability, transparency and accountability.

Inheriting an economy with a natural resource base of about nil, the foundations of which was built around taxes and tariffs, The Gambian government quickly realised that the only way to achieve meaningful development and augment the country's tiny resource base would be through enhanced private sector development. It would also demand substantial foreign capital injection and the accompanying technological expertise as well as a well-developed human resource base and access into the international market.

The Gambia has vigorously pursued a socio-economic policy committed to free enterprise and private sector development. The nerve of which is the inauguration of "The Gambia incorporated… Vision 2020" initiative, a policy document representing the blueprint designed to guide the country's progress into its envisioned future.

Encapsulated in it is the will and aspiration of the people and government of The Gambia to transform the country into a "financial centre, a tourist paradise, a trading, export-oriented agricultural and manufacturing nation, thriving on free market policies and a vibrant private sector. Sustained by a well-educated, trained, skill, healthy, self reliant and enterprising population.

Investing in The Gambia, West Africa

The Gambia is an investment haven. This potential and promise is predicated upon sound and consistent macroeconomic polices, constitutional guarantees against expropriation of investment and for protection of investment

The Gambia has an investment policy, which is premised on six important pillars/premises. These pillars essentially include:

Liberal, free market economic environment together with appropriate political and social policy and programme framework;

Adherence to the principles of democratic governance, constitutional guarantee of  rights to freedom and liberty, welfare, property ownership and protection. In this regard, the country is constitutionally obliged to encourage, promote and protect beneficial investment as the enabler of socioeconomic change and progress.

Full integration into the wider global economy through her membership of and adherence to charters and principles of Economic Community of West African States, Organisation of African Unity, World Trade Organisation,  Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), African Development Bank, The World Bank Group,  ACP-EU Convention, Islamic Development Bank and a host of bilateral trade agreements among others. These testify to the national resolve at participation and integration in the global economy.

Articulation of policies and strategies to make The Gambia a trade and investment gateway to the Western Africa sub-regional and the larger African regional market. The uniqueness of the country's  location on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, proximity to European and North American markets, a highly efficient port system, state-of-the-art telecommunication infrastructure, high water table and ideal climate for horticulture, unrivalled rich climate and sea resource for tourism and sea resource exploitation amongst a host of other qualities, have placed the Gambia at a comparatively advantageous position to become the sub-regional hegemony in trade and services;

Conducive legal and institutional framework with labour laws that support and encourage collective bargaining in line with the stipulation of the Labour Act;

A national resolve and commitment to transform The Gambia into a middle income country by the year 2020

Gambia-Libya: Gambia expels Libyan diplomats, citizens

Banjul, Gambia - The government of Gambia has given Libyan diplomats and citizens resident in the country to leave within 72 hours, as it also froze all Libyan investments in the country, the state-owned radio and television services announced here Saturday. According to a news release from State House, the directive is binding until a lasting solution is found to the political unrest in Libya. The Gambian government said its decision followed the political unrest in the north African country, where its leader, Mouammar Kadhafi has refused to step down. Libyan investments frozen by the Gambian government included six hotels, one park (playing ground), agriculture garden, one bank and one road construction company. The first batch of Libyans left the country Saturday for Dakar, Senegal, while others, including senior officials at the Libyan Embassy in Banjul, are expected to leave Sunday

Flying Eagles rout Gambia for Colombia ticket

After the hiccup of losing to Cameroun on Thursday, Nigeria's U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, beat Gambia's Young Scorpions 2-0 on Sunday, to earn a semifinal berth and also a ticket to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia in July.

The first half of the match which was played at Milpark Stadium was nothing to write home about, though the Flying Eagles looked the more ambitious but their final pass let them down on many occasions. The Gambian team led by their captain, Gassama Saikou tried to get the goal that would have guaranteed them a place in Colombia but the defensive duo of Ogungbe Ganiu and Arokoyo Gbenga stood the onslaught helped in part by the stand-in-captain, Ramon Azeez.

The first half ended with the Nigerian team in the ascendancy as news filtered in that the Ghanaian Black Satellites were in the lead over the Cameroun team and at that point, Ghana and Cameroun were the teams qualifying from the group. If the Flying Eagles had played a goalless draw, then the defending world champions would have salvaged their pride but that was not to be as the Nigerians scored the goals that were needed in the second half through Stanley Okoro in the 65th minute and the clincher by Azeez 12 minutes later.

Little Messi's entrance

Okoro, who plays for Almeria in Spain and is dubbed ‘little Messi' had come on for Kayode Olanrewaju in the 62nd minute and immediately was into the fray with some smart dribbling. Three minutes after his introduction, Abdul Ajagun exchanged passes on the edge of the Gambian box with Azeez and the return pass released Okoro, who slotted a first-time right foot shot past the Gambian keeper, Camara Musa.

The Gambians tried to pressurise the Nigerian team down the flanks but Terna Suswan and Blessing Anyanwu, who played at the left and right-back positions defended their positions very well.

The second goal duly arrived 12 minutes later with another move on the edge of the box by Uche Nwofor and Terna Suswan. Two-goal hero against Ghana, Nwofor was then brought down by Savage Baboucarr for a free kick.

The free kick was teed up by Suswan and was blasted in by Azeez and that was the ticket to Colombia delivered and sealed.

The Flying Eagles however have to settle for second position in Group B as Ghana and Cameroun drew 1-1 and the Camerounians finished top of the group with seven points to Nigeria's six.

In Group A, Mali confirmed their first place by playing a 1-1 draw with Lesotho. They had earlier defeated South Africa and Egypt, 4-2 and 1-0 respectively. Egypt came in second when they defeated hosts, South Africa 1-0.

The semi-final matches will be played at Dobsonville on Thursday with Nigeria facing Mali while Egypt will face Cameroun while the final will come up on Sunday.
