African Under 17 Championship Holders Gambia Stunnedas Cote d'Ivoire Win

Holders Gambia were yesterday stunned 3-0 by Congo Brazzaville in their opening match of the 9th Africa Youth U-17 Championship taking place in Rwanda.

The match between the two-time past winners Gambia and Congo was played at the newly constructed Umuganda stadium in Rwanda’s third largest city of Rubavu, where all group B matches are scheduled to be played.

Congo were two goals to the good in the opening seven minutes through Samarange Binguila (4) and Stevy Epako (7) and went into the half time break with a comfortable lead. Binguila added the third with a quarter of an hour left.

As defending champions, Gambia arrived in Rwanda as one of the favourites to win this tournament but the 3-0 defeat in the first game leaves them in a complicated situation where they need to win their next two matches to have a chance of reaching the semifinals.
